The Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 can deliver decent resolution figures but it's not perfect. At fully open aperture, the center is already sharp and the borders are also pretty good. However, the extreme corners are soft. Stopping down to f/4 boosts the quality across the image field with an outstanding center followed by a very good border and good corners. The peak performance is reached between f/5.6 and f/8. Diffraction has a higher impact from f/11 onward but then you rarely need such settings on Micro-Four-Thirds cameras.

The tested sample had a good centering quality.

Verdict

The Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 is entering a busy segment of the market. It has some interesting value propositions but the pricing is, unfortunately, very bold. At 900US$ it better has to be excellent. Now while the lens is certainly good, it stays somewhat short of this expectation at least. The center quality is great and the borders are also very sharp at mainstream settings. The extreme corners aren't quite as convincing though. They are downright soft at f/2.8 and it's a good idea to stop down to f/4, better f/5.6 where the results are decent. The vignetting is also higher than usual especially at f/2.8. A downright stellar performance is the lack of distortion - probably the best ever measured quality here and we are talking about the native characteristic and not about a digitally corrected result.

The mechanical qualities are also impressive. It feels like a lens from the good ol' days - in a positive way. The lens body is made of metal and the controls are smooth as silk. As aspect that is probably going to be less popular is the lack of AF and an electronically couple aperture. However, thanks to its unique Dual Link Iris, the aperture ring can be changed to a movie-friendly mode (smooth settings rather than clicks) so this makes some sense at least.

Convincing mainstream MFT users of this lens is probably going to be a bit tough especially at this price point. Movie makers have different priorities regarding the AF and aperture handling though and we could well imagine that the Kowa Prominar MFT 8.5mm f/2.8 will find some friends here.

종합 평가

이 렌즈는 이미 포화된 시장에 진입하고 있는데 관심을 끄는 요소가 있지만 불행히도 가격이 너무 세다.$900면 탁월한 수준이 되어야 한다.이 렌즈는 분명 우수한 편이지만 적어도 기대에는 미치지 못한다.중앙부는 아주 우수하고 주변부도 주요 조리개에선 아주 샤프하지만 극 주변부가  그다지 좋지 않다.극 주변부는 개방에서는 확실히 소프트하고 f4로 조여야 나아지며 f5.6에서야 근사한 화질이 나온다.개방에서는 비네팅도 보통 보다 많이 생긴다.다만 왜곡은 거의 없는 수준으로서 최고 수준이다-디지탈 보정이 없는 상태에서 말이다.

기계적 성능도 인상적인데 오래된 렌즈의 좋은 느낌이다.렌즈 본체는 금속제로서 비단처럼  부드럽게 작동한다.다만 AF가 아니고 수동 조리개라는 점이 걸린다.그러나 독특한 듀얼 링크 아이리스 덕분에 조리개 링은 딱딱 끊어지지 않고 무단계로 부드럽게 작동하므로 이 점은 돋보인다.

가격 때문에 화질 위주로 평가하는 유저를 설득하기는 좀 힘들어 보이지만 영상 제작자들에겐 AF나 조리개 조작에 대해서 우선 순위가 다르기 때문에 그런 분야에서는 괜찮은 선택이 될지도 모르겠다.
