The Myset settings on the Olympus OM-D series cameras let you easily jump between completely different types of shooting modes. If you’re anything like me, you’re not using the same camera settings to take landscapes on a tripod as you are to photograph family portraits.  Myset settings allow you to store different “presets” so you can easily move between them. These presets become invaluable timesavers, and can keep your eyes on what matters, instead of buried in menus.

1. Set up “baseline” settings

Before setting up a Myset preset, you should get the camera into a mode that you want to save.  For instance, I have a “Normal Shooting” Myset setting.  For me, this is a good baseline setting — something I can build from, but also where I’d like my camera to be 90% of the time.  In this setting, I mostly care about auto ISO, S-AF, and having image stabilization and face priority set on.

2. Access the Myset menu

Tap the menu button on your camera and under “Shooting Menu 1” you’ll see “Reset/Myset”.  Hit OK and this will take you into the Myset settings.  Highlight Myset1 and tap the right arrow button.

3. Register your Myset preset

Using the up/down arrows, you have the option to set your current settings, or to reset them.  Reset will clear whatever is currently in this Myset setting, Set will register your current settings as Myset1.  In this case, highlight Set and tap the OK button.  The current setting is now saved as Myset1.

In the Myset1 menu, you have the option to register your settings or clear this preset.

4. Test your Myset settings

Exit the menus, go back out the super control panel and change a parameter or two.

Now, go back into the menus.  Go to Shooting Menu 1 -> Reset/Myset -> Myset1.   Tap Yes to activate Myset1.

NOTE: Make sure that you tap OK on Myset1 to get into the menu to activate it.  Tapping the right arrow will bring you to the register/reset settings menu.

Activate Myset1

Exit the menu and tap OK to access the super control panel.  Your shooting settings should reflect what you stored in Myset1, as seen below.

At this point, you can build off of your Myset1 setting.  Below, you can see how I change my “normal” settings over to “tripod shooting”.  I turn ISO to low, the 2 second timer on, and face detect and image stabilization off.  Now you can just go into the Myset menu, pick Myset2, and save these settings.

How do you remember all these presets if they’re just called “Myset”?

The Olympus OM-D E-M5ir?t=joeturiphot-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0074WDD allows you 4 Myset presets.  Unfortunately you can’t name them in camera. I get around this problem by using Evernote, a handy digital notebook app on my iPhone. I keep the presets in a notebook and have a quick shortcut to them so they’re easy to get to. I may even tweak a setting in the field, and if I do, I can quickly update the note on my phone.
