What’s the difference? Actually, there are many differences:

• Amateurs stop when they achieve something. Professionals understand that the initial achievement is just the beginning.
• Amateurs have a goal. Professionals have a process.
• Amateurs think they are good at everything. Professionals understand their circles of competence.
• Amateurs see feedback and coaching as someone criticizing them as a person. Professionals know they have weak spots and seek out thoughtful criticism.
• Amateurs value isolated performance. Think about the receiver who catches the ball once on a difficult throw. Professionals value consistency. Can I catch the ball in the same situation 9 times out of 10?
• Amateurs give up at the first sign of trouble and assume they’re failures. Professionals see failure as part of the path to growth and mastery.
• Amateurs don’t have any idea what improves the odds of achieving good outcomes. Professionals do.
• Amateurs show up to practice to have fun. Professionals realize that what happens in practice happens in games.
• Amateurs focus on identifying their weaknesses and improving them. Professionals focus on their strengths and on finding people who are strong where they are weak.
• Amateurs think knowledge is power. Professionals pass on wisdom and advice.
• Amateurs focus on being right. Professionals focus on getting the best outcome.
• Amateurs focus on first-level thinking. Professionals focus on second-level thinking.
• Amateurs think good outcomes are the result of their brilliance. Professionals understand when outcomes are the result of luck.
• Amateurs focus on the short term. Professionals focus on the long term.
• Amateurs focus on tearing other people down. Professionals focus on making everyone better.
• Amateurs make decisions in committees so there is no one person responsible if things go wrong. Professionals make decisions as individuals and accept responsibility.
• Amateurs blame others. Professionals accept responsibility.
• Amateurs show up inconsistently. Professionals show up every day.
• Amateurs go faster. Professionals go further.
• Amateurs go with the first idea that comes into their head. Professionals realize the first idea is rarely the best idea.
• Amateurs think in ways that can't be invalidated. Professionals don't.
• Amateurs think in absolutes. Professionals think in probabilities.

There are a host of other differences, but they can effectively be boiled down to two things: fear and reality.

1. 아마추어는 무언가를 성취하면 그만둔다. 프로는 처음의 성취는 그저 시작일 뿐임을 이해한다.
2. 아마추어는 목표를 중시한다. 프로는 과정을 중시한다.
3. 아마추어는 자신이 모든 것에 능숙하다고 생각한다. 프로는 자신의 능력 범위를 이해한다.
4. 아마추어는 누군가의 의견과 지도를 인격적 비판으로 본다. 프로는 자신의 약점을 알고, 사려 깊은 비판을 구한다.
5. 아마추어는 개별적인 성과를 중시한다. 예를 들어, 잡기 어려운 공을 잡아낸 것만 생각한다. 프로는 일관성을 중시한다. ‘같은 상황이 10번 오면 그중 9번에서 공을 잡아낼 수 있을까?’라고 생각한다.
6. 아마추어는 문제가 생길 조짐이 보이면 포기하고, 실패했다고 생각한다. 프로는 실패를 성장과 숙달로 가는 길의 일부라고 본다.
7. 아마추어들은 어떻게 해야 좋은 결과를 얻을 확률을 높일 수 있는지 모른다. 프로는 안다.
8. 아마추어는 즐기려고 연습에 참여한다. 프로는 연습이 실제 경기로 이어진다는 사실을 알고 있다.
9. 아마추어는 자기 약점을 알아내 개선하는 데 중점을 둔다. 프로는 자기 강점에 초점을 맞추고, 자신이 약한 곳에서 누가 강한지 알아내는 데 집중한다.
10. 아마추어는 지식이 힘이라고 생각한다. 프로는 지혜와 조언을 전한다.
11. 아마추어는 틀리지 않는 것에 중점을 둔다. 프로는 최상의 결과를 얻는 데 중점을 둔다.
12. 아마추어는 1차적 사고에 중점을 둔다. 전문가는 2차적 사고에 중점을 둔다.
13. 아마추어는 좋은 결과가 나오면 자기 덕분이라고 생각한다. 프로는 좋은 결과가 운의 탓일 수 있다는 점을 이해한다.
14. 아마추어는 단기간에 집중한다. 프로는 장기간에 집중한다.
15. 아마추어들은 다른 이들을 괴롭히는 데 집중한다. 프로는 모든 이들이 함께 잘되게 하는 데 집중한다.
16. 아마추어는 다른 이들의 의견에 따라 결정을 내리기 때문에, 일이 잘못되어도 아무도 책임을 지지 않는다. 프로는 스스로 결정을 내리고 그 결정에 책임을 진다.
17. 아마추어는 다른 사람 탓을 한다. 프로는 책임을 진다.
18. 아마추어는 일관성 없이 나타난다. 프로는 매일 나타난다.

이 외에도 다른 차이점이 많이 있지만, 결국 핵심은 두려움과 현실의 차이다.
